On Translation Of Language Deviation In Fortress Besieged From The Perspective Of Equivalence Theory

"Wei Cheng" (Fortress Besieged) is one of the greatest novels of Modern China. There are a lot of deviations employed in the language of Fortress Besieged which adds much to the writing style of the writer and the artistic effect of the novel. This is one of the reasons why the novel is such a success and deserves appreciation. Deviation is a prominent phenomenon in language. Most deviations are concise but contain extremely rich meanings. In fact, in a literary text, the writer often adopts the deviational use of language to express their intention and draw the readers' attention. Qian Zhongshu is a master of language. In his works, we can find a lot of deviations that sometimes make us laugh, sometimes make us meditate. Fortress Besieged is one of Qian Zhongshu's masterpieces and deviations are also widely used in it. How to deal with deviation translation is a very important issue and it remains a hard task for translators. Based on Nida's Equivalence Theory and the translating strategies adopted by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao, this thesis studies the translation of deviations to find answers to the above question.Chapter One introduces Qian Zhongshu and his well-known novel Wei Cheng, this chapter also gives a brief introduction to the English translation of Wei Cheng and the researches on the translation. Then the significance of the present paper is shown.Chapter Two is about deviation. In this chapter the definition and classification of deviations are illustrated in detail. This chapter also introduces several other related concepts.Chapter Three is the literature review, in which the development of Equivalence Theory at home and abroad is introduced. This chapter introduces Nida's Equivalence Theory, illustrates its theoretical background, its characteristics as well as its guidance to deviation translation.Chapter Four is the focus of the thesis, which probes into the strategies of translating deviation adopted by the translators in the translation of Fortress Besieged. In seeking of faithfulness and equivalence, the translators adopt various strategies including corresponding, literal translation, literal translation plus annotation and some other methods. This chapter also analyzes the effect of these strategies in the light of Equivalence Theory.In Conclusion, we restate the significance of the Equivalence Theory in deviation translation. To translate deviation, the translators should bear equivalence in mind and adopt various translation strategies with agility. Generally speaking, translation of deviation in the English version of Fortress Besieged has achieved an approximately equivalent effect to the original.
