Christianity And The New Life Movement In Republic China

This thesis focuses on the Christianity and the New Life Movement. In New Life Movement, Christianity played an important role, but in nearly half century, the few scholars studied this problem, the effect of the Church public figures and Christians have not attracted sufficient attention in some study about the New Life Movement. The thesis mainly discusses how Christianity and the New Life Movement do move towards the cooperation, illustrates the main matters, the influence and problems in cooperation in beginning of knowing the foundation of the Christianity and the New Life Movement in cooperation under the historical background of the government and church so as to understand the relationship between the politics and religion rationally.The whole article includes there parts. First is introduction that introduces the previous achievements of the study for the Christianity and the New Life Movement, explains the main content, thinking, methods and faults of the article. In order to know the problem objectively, paper put the objective what we study under the historical background of that society. The next including four chapters is text that introduces the cooperative background of the Christianity and the New Life Movement, the attitude of the cooperative sides, the practices and the impact of cooperation respectively, and so on. In the early of 1930's, on the one hand, the Kuomindang government was facing both internal and external problems in view of arousing the masses to fight, so requested urgently to hold a movement for the revival of the spirit in the country. On the other hand, Christianity which withstood a great setback also needed to adjust the policies of preaching, at this time, Social Gospel thinking entered into China, which promoted cooperation of the Christianity and the New Life Movement. For the cooperation, the Government's attitude was very urgent, but church always was worry about it, however, church finally decided to cooperate with government. In the cooperation, their main activities were concentrating village affairs before the Anti-Japanese War, after the war outbreak, they came into wartime service. The cooperation of the Christianity and the New Life Movement not only promoted the launching of the New Life Movement but also to the development of Christianity in China. The successful cause of cooperation between Christianity and the New Life Movement was mainly the common ideas of both sides except of the requirements of social reality. The final part of thesis is conclusion. The cooperation between Christianity and the New Life Movement brings positive effects to both sides, but also there were so many deeper problems in it. Firstly, the government failed to comply with the principle of separation of church and state that regarded church just as a tool for maintaining the rule. Secondly, in cooperation, Church relapsed into politics so lost independence and sacred nature. For the sake of the harmony of the sacred and the common custom and the building of the good relationship between the government and the church, whether the government or the church, all should abide by the principles of the separation of church and state that cooperated mutually on this basis.
