In light of the application of relevance theory into the translation practices as proposed by Ernst-August Gutt, this thesis explains the strategies and methods for metaphor translation and sheds some light on the cognitive mechanisms underlying metaphor comprehension involved in it. Relevance theory provides us with a new perspective for translation studies. The understanding of metaphors, as pointed out in the thesis, is a unique communication process during which a relevance-driven mechanism is involved. Metaphor translation is an interpretive transference of what the original is intended to convey. Such an interpretive endeavor is to ensure that TL readers can obtain adequate contextual effects with relatively minimum cognitive or processing effort and meanwhile, best comprehend the original as well. The author of this thesis tries to make an analysis of metaphor translation in the two different versions of Hongloumeng from the perspective of relevance theory. According to relevance theory, during the process of inferential comprehension the readers will select proper meanings by identifying the contextual implications. Relevance theory also proposes the notion of direct and indirect translation and classifies both as the interpretive use of language. Therefore, a contrast of these English versions offers an empirical and cognitive account of translation studies. The main part of this thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the research background, methodology and the significance of this thesis.Chapter Two describes the basic notions, concepts and criticisms of the relevance theory, such as Ostensive-inferential communication, contextual assumptions and the principle of relevance. In the end, the process of translation is analyzed in the framework of relevance theory.Chapter Three mainly focuses on the comprehension of metaphor in translation practice. An introduction to the concept and functions of metaphor is given at the very beginning. And some of the particular examples of metaphors in Hongloumeng are analyzed. Then the author presents the translation principles, the role and the social and cultural background of the translators proposed in relevance theory. Finally, the responsibilities and requirements of the translators are pointed out.Chapter Four is the main part of this thesis. A comparison of the metaphor translation in the two English versions of Hongloumeng is made. After a brief introduction to the two translations, the author analyzes in detail the translation of metaphors in this novel. At last comes the conclusion. The author points out that relevance theory is of great significance to translation theory and practice. Based on the analysis of metaphor translation in the two English versions of Hongloumeng, the author tries to provide an adequate account of relevant translation principles and methods under the framework of relevance theory. Meanwhile, it is pointed out that the relevance theory provides a useful theoretic framework for translation studies, though there are still many places needing further improvement.
