Hong Lou Meng, or A Dream of Red Mansions, is one of the greatest Chinese classics. Reading this classic, one can always amaze at its super charisma. New and novel concepts can always be discovered by researchers even though it was published two centuries ago. Some scholars still claim that more information can be found in it, which is mainly due to its unique and various uses of implicatures in its artistic expression. Implicature provides scholars with specific perspectives and strong proofs for their researches on translation of this kind of literary works. This thesis is composed of five chapters to explicate the process of comprehensive understanding and overall representing of the implicatures in literary works within the frame of conceptual integration.Chapter One is the brief introduction to the researches made by other scholars at home and abroad, and to the research purpose of this thesis. Hong Lou Meng is a unique novel containing many implications in terms of its implicit language, vivid characters, wonderful plots and ingenious narration. Besides, the colorful Chinese culture characteristics are presented, which has specific identifications for Chinese readers. The successful translation of it will help foreigners gain better access to Chinese classics and traditional Chinese culture, and will also deepen the mutual communication between China and the world.Chapter Two probes the concept of conceptual integration with its four specific interactive mental spaces. With the shared mental space (the generic space), the cognitive processes are the mapping and projecting mental activities from the two input spaces to the blend space. Mappings operate to build and link mental spaces. The special vitality of the model is the existence of emergent structure, which is a brand new element with its dependence on the interactive functions of the spaces. Mental space and schema contain basic elements for each conceptual space. This thesis researches on the formation and representation of the spaces and schemata, for the construction of the conceptual integration, the understanding and representation of the implicatures. In recognizing the original text, the four mental spaces have the interactive functions to form the integrated conceptual understanding. It is crucial for the success of a literary translation whether this integrated understanding in the source text (ST) could be successfully transformed into the target text (TT) or not. Each element that has had its function in the ST integration should have its counterpart in the process of translation in achieving the goal of corresponding reconstruction of the integration in the TT, and each element or background information that could inspire the final integration is needed too.Chapters Three and Four explain the process of understanding the integration and the process of reconstructing the integration respectively. The analysis will focus mainly on the integrating concept of motif, integrating concept of co-text message and integrating concept of culture in the literary translation. The formulation of meaning in the direction of the four spaces is reasonable to construct the mental schemata and the implicit meanings. The representation of meaning should both observe the source and take into consideration of the target. Some of the message should be content-based, some form-based. Concerning the related discourse, the full message should be enriched with the coherent texts and social background. For the cultural image concerned, the representation should seek intertextual ways to represent the original characteristics.Chapter Five describes the function and the construction of the intertextual environment. In this sense, the related work should be done and the corresponding environment should be constructed to form the intertextuality for the success of the TT, which will be of great help for the translators' fulfillment. The target text readers will also find it the easy way to prompt the intercultural communication. In conclusion, analysis has been made of the two famous versions of the classic with the help of the cognitive conceptual integration and mental schemata. Finally, this thesis points out that this research is meant to find a rational perspective to view the process of literary translation. And the supplementary and necessary function of intertextuality has come into play.
