The tools for Lin feng-mian's color drawing-ink paintings are Xuan paper, brush pen and water ink, combined with some western painting materials, such as gouache color and water color. The subjects of the artist's paintings usually include landscape, beautiful ladies, flowers and birds, still life, and characters in traditional operas and so on. The composition of his paintings almost is square. In addition, some light shadow or color factors of impressionism and the space management or feelings of modern western paintings are involved in his paintings. With exploration and practice in high art, oriental and occidental art factors are integrated by Lin feng-mian, which has clearly artistic style and afford for thought. Lin feng-mian acquired plentiful achievements in color paintings, who describe Chinese social psychology and emotions of Chinese in 20th century. The artist has always focuseed on subjective and expressive force of paintings. Therefore his paintings are full of sentiment. Although simple and compact painting techniques are used, the paintings give more expression to abundant connotation. Constitutive principles of geometrical body such as circular, square, triangle have been used in his paintings, which cause a kind of melodious form. The characteristics of his pen movement are speediness, pithiness and lifelikeness, which are different from characteristics of scholar-bureaucrats in Yuan Ming Qing Dynasties. Lin feng-mian who broke away from the composition and color of traditional Chinese paintings, integrated some traits of western arts with Chinese arts. This drawing mode provides a promising way for traditional Chinese painting and may have significant influence on Chinese modern arts.
