The Study Of The Double-object Verb

The study of the double-object verb has been one of the most heated topics in modern linguistics. In this text we propose our own opinions on some problems about the double-object verb on the basis of the past studying, and use different theories to study the double-object verb from different angles, in the hope of strengthening understanding of the double-object verb and offering reference for teaching and machine translation, etc..This paper is divided into six parts. In the first part we summarize the previous studies, from the theoretical point of view, previous studies will be divided into two parts: Traditional Grammar theoretical study and research on contemporary linguistic theory. While absorbing the essence of previous research, we still present our views on the inadequacy of these studies.In part two we proceed with offering type of the double-object verb, find out the generality of offering type of the double-object verb, according to this, we try to draw up a standard of distinguishing the double-object verb, and get a word form containing 541 double-object verbs by checking " the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary " according to this standard. We oppose the standard that put forward by Lu JianMing. On the basis of sentence grammar theory, we think of the double-object structure is a independence sentence type, its form of expression is V +N1 +N2, the meaning is that " the things is shifted ", every verb which accord with this condition is verbs of double-object.In part three, we study the double-object verb in terms of metaphor and metonymy, and they are important tool and means of mankind cognitive. In the double-object structure, the understanding of offering double-object verb is based on the concrete things. People understand the course that the abstract concept is offered through the understanding the course that the concrete things are offered. In offering complicated incident, it is made up of a lot of points of incidents, so points of incidents can represent for the whole incident. There are six kinds of point of incidents in offering incidents: Purpose represents offer, media represents offer, way represents offer, movement represents offer, cause represents offer and delay time movement represents pay. In part four we study the interpretation mode of the double-object verb. We introduce the term of " concern roles "to analyze the interpretations of 541 double-object verbs in the word form. According to the number which concern roles appeared in the interpretations, we have classified the 541 verbs, especially two objects which are closely related to double-object verbs.In part five, we have mainly investigated the translation situation of the double-object construction in modern Chinese. The software we selected is Yaxin 2.5 translation software. Under the terms of using the systematic dictionary and grammar system, 541 Chinese sentences made by 541 double-object verbs are translated by translation software. The result is unsatisfactory, there are many mistakes, we summarize eight kinds of main wrong types altogether. The Yaxin translation software adopt broad grammar system, it is not suitable for two objects, so we attempt to revise the grammar system to improve the quality of translating. The Yaxin translation software is unable to divide the positions of two objects correctly, so this method does not get up.The Yaxin translation software has also adopted the translation memory principle, users can make one's own example sentence storehouse. We added these 541 sentences into user's example sentence storehouse after these sentences being translated. Later we translate10 simple sentences from Chinese really Test, the result is good by seeing translations, but when we test another group of 10 more complicated sentences, the result is unsatisfactory. Compared the two groups, we find the quality of translation relates to matching rate, and the level of the matching rate relates to scale of the example sentence storehouse, so we could get better translation quality by expanding the scale of the example sentence storehouse constantly.At last we find some translation embodiments of the double-object construction from the bilingual corpus of Harbin Industry University. Through these embodiments, combined the usage in English, we summarize eight models of structure of the double-object construction. Using these eight models, we can get a good translation according to key verb of English. Because of restriction of automatic participle technology, we can't apply these models to machine translation at present, it needs further study still.
