A knowledge of the nature of art, and the functional roles which colour plays in presenting emotions and expressing the inner world would probably enable us to elevate our aesthetic taste and creative techniques by taking advantages over the subjective colours.The text consists of six sections jointly dealing with the colour and its emotional functions in Dunhuang Mogao frescoes.The first reviews the historical sources of Mogao frescoes, especially the internally evolutional mechanism of the contents and colour forms including mould-making characteristics in Mogao frescoes, investigating the inevitable and necessary conditions for the emergence of the outstanding achievement of Sui-Tang frescoes.The second, focusing on the features and effects of the colour in Sui-Tang frescoes, places an emphasis on the specific styles of colour perception based on the general formality of various paints in certain representative works created in different stages, so as to throw light on the general law and distinctive time information in the colour language. All these are revealed in detail as below: the splendid works of Sui Dynasty adopts multiple artistic genes; the works created in early period of Tang Dynasty full of freedom of individuality and harmonious forms; the works in the flourishing period of Tang Dynasty are magnificent and mighty enough to reveal the specific time spirit; The frescoes in the middle period of Tang Dynasty tend to be pure, fresh and elegant in taste; The Late Tang lays stress on a down-to-earth depiction of the real life and simple humane.The third, aiming at the application and innovation of colour in Mogao frescoes, makes a summary of the distinctive characteristics of the colour languages in Sui-Tang periods by exploring the special quality of widely applied paints in Mogao frescoes.The forth explains the emotional functions of colour in Sui-Tang frescoes, and the major aspects which determine the great achievements of Sui-Tang frescoes from diversity perspectives of perfect fission of colours and mould-making factors, the traditional aesthetic taste and the exquisite decoration in works of frescoes.The fifth explains the emotional functions of colour in Sui-Tang frescoes.The last section intends to predict the practical values in the emotional functions of colours in Sui -Tang frescoes of Mogao Grottoes.
