Defamiliarization theory was an important content in Russian formalistic literature in the early 20th century, which was applied to the whole art literature field afterwards. And had great influence on the scope of world . Defamiliarization is a way of creation, which produces distance beauty between appreciators and works through deconstruction and innovation of tradition. The paper discusses the Defamiliarization theory from the angle of oil painting with re-integration of the content of the oil painting language Defamiliarization,,discovering its connotation and studying its value in the oil painting creations.The introduction part is about the connotation of Defamiliarization in literature briefly and its successful usage in literature language.The principal part of the paper has four chapters, with Defamiliarization in the oil painting creations as a core , analyzing its connotation, representative forms and using methods in the oil painting ,discussing its significance and value to the development of modern oil painting.Chapter 1 gives the definition and interpretation about the connotation of Defamiliarization and the textual research range. The paper mainly focuses on its connotation from the oil painting angle, which produces refreshing visual effect by processing familiar objects and established artistic symbols. Therefore, the audience re-examine the world with new judgments and special feelings by being transmitted the brand-new and unique information, breaking and revising their esthetic format. The paper mainly probes into the widespread usage of Defamliarization in western modern painting creation after Impressionism. Of course, except for western modern painting creation, there were many artists who forsook the standard established by former artistic master and tried to be novel and original, but they don't belong to the scope of the paper's discussion and aren't involved in the thesis because of the different historical period, background and creative methods.Chapter 2 is about Defamiliarization's manifestation and function in the western modern paintings. Its development can be divided into three phases approximately. Firstly, the end of 19s century, the visual sense of the audience received a challenge by breakthrough of color, perspective, physique and space. Secondly, from the beginning of the 20th century, the audience received the challenge of the traditional thought by using thinking skills, such as symbol, ironic and metaphor. Thirdly, 1970's later, the audience got an all-directional challenge from visual sense and traditional thinking through comprehensively applying various ways.Chapter 3 discusses how to apply Defamiliarization in western modern paintings. There are about five methods: the abstraction of physique, the abstraction of color, comprehensive methods such as symbol, spatial pluralism exploration and so on.Chapter 4 summarizes that Defamiliarization plays an important part and has great value in the contemporary paintings development in two aspects, firstly from the point of the content, the appreciator, and interactive correlation between artists and audience, secondly, from different angles adopting deduction in accordance with the concrete realities of China.The key of Defamiliarization in art is unceasingly innovating and renovating. For an artist, one who must above all explore a suitable way to his or hers own nature by renewal of ideas, the breakthrough of fixed style, getting rid of limits of the school and the style , trying new content, form and representation methods. In addition, artists must create great works with distinctive features of our own time through penetrating and taking root in the societies in which we live, having a deep comprehension and awareness of the well-being and emotions of the broad masses.
