This thesis tries to study tourism materials translation from the perspective of pragmatic failure. As pragmatic failure is one of the important causes to lead to unsuccessful tourism materials translation, the thesis analyzes major reasons for pragmatic failure in tourism materials translation and some strategies are put forward at last to avoid pragmatic failure. This thesis aims at solving some problems in tourism materials translation and it is expected to provide some help to improve and perfect the present tourism materials translation.The twenty first century has witnessed the trend of globalization, and thus the rapid development of globalization leads to more and more international communication, exchanges and cooperation. Under this international environment and circumstance, on one hand, people are eager to make their own information and culture known to the world; on the other hand, people are eager to know other countries'information and culture. This indicates the booming of cross-cultural communication activities.Tourism, as the activity of conveying information and culture, gets more and more development in recent years and has become a big industry and profitable field. China is rich in natural and cultural scenic spots, and each year China will welcome a large number of visitors throughout the world. Due to differences both in language and culture, the conflict between foreign tourists and Chinese tradition and culture comes into being. English translation of tourism materials rises to the occasion to solve this conflict and promote communication. As one significant medium to introduce Chinese tourist culture, English translation of tourism materials plays a more and more significant role.However, looking around tourism materials translation nowadays, it can not be denied there are some excellent translation, however, there is still a lot which needs great improvements or changes. When confronted with the unsuccessful or even bad translation, foreign tourists will feel confused, or sometimes find it difficult to accept or even feel disgusting. This will lead to mistakes, misunderstanding, confusion or breakdown during the transmission of information and culture, and consequently will impede the development of tourism in China. So it's an urgent and essential task for translators responsible for tourism materials translation to produce perfect translation.As tourism materials translation is a kind of cross-cultural activity, the translators should not only be faithful to the scenic spots'features and culture and convey them to foreign tourists, but also they should take the thinking mode and the acceptability of the western tourists into consideration. In order to perfect the present tourism materials translation, the very first step for translators is to study the existing problems. Except for language performance error and grammatical error, pragmatic failure also plays an important role in leading to the unsuccessful or even bad translation.Pragmatic failure is one notion and research field of pragmatics. Pragmatics is a new rising branch in linguistics, and is developing fast after its birth. The mergers of pragmatics with other disciplines enrich and widen linguistics. Pragmatic translation is the merger of pragmatics and translation, which refers to the imposing of pragmatic theories into translation practice so as to solve some problems in translation. It has obtained increasing attention and achievements home and abroad. And this thesis is going to analyze and discuss tourism materials translation from the perspective of pragmatic failure, and offer some strategies to avoid pragmatic failure. It's hoped that this thesis can be of some help and suggestion to perfect and improve the present tourism materials translation.This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is introduction. The second chapter introduces some relative information about tourism materials. The third chapter focuses on the survey of pragmatic translation and pragmatic failure. The fourth chapter dwells on the analysis and discussion of pragmatic failure in tourism materials translation. The fifth chapter puts forward some strategies to avoid pragmatic failure. The sixth chapter is conclusion.
