The past researches on Zeng Ji-ze have been mostly on diplomatic area, while the research on the aspect of culture has been rare nor there is a comprehensive study. This thesis is trying to analyze Zeng Ji-ze's views on the western culture comprehensively.The thesis is divided into three parts:Part One reviews the formation of Zeng Ji-ze's views on the western culture.In the second half of the 19th century, China was facing serious national and social crisis. Under such situation, some advanced Chinese claimed to learn from the advanced west. Zeng Guo-fang was an important person in the Westernization Movement, and his thought greatly influenced his son Zeng Ji-ze. Western languages played an key role in the study of Western nations'policy on wealth. Such idea promoted Zeng to learn these languages. His mastering the tool of understanding the West helped to form his view on the western culture.. Zeng had an open mind to know the west learning, and he affirmed to admit the gap between China and the West, so as to work hard to catch up with the West, strengthening the exchange between China and the West. This attitude definitely promoted to form his view on the western culture. Part Two discusses the main content of Zeng Ji-ze's views on the western culture.Zeng Ji-ze opposed the close-door policy and supported the open-door policy. He had a fresh cognition on the Western social and political institutions, the international laws and Christianity. He paid the most attention to the study of the Western culture and education, and he accepted and sparkplug the Western culture and education. He also had a unique opinion on the Western customs and public feelings, western arts and sciences. What's more, wrote books to advocate the western culture.Part There evaluates Zeng's view on the western culture. Its positive aspects are affirmed while its negative aspects are not evaded.The creative points of this thesis are as following:1. Bringing Zeng Ji-ze's cognition of the international laws and Christianity into the category of cultural view;2. Through the research of the modern excellent diplomat Zeng Ji-ze, exploring the advancement and limitations of Zeng's view on the western culture.3. Appraising Zeng Ji-ze's view on the western culture comprehensively.
