Being an important part of Chinese higher education, higher vocational education is different from not only middle school teaching, but also college or universities. Its English teaching aims and students'specific conditions make the processes of learning and teaching English practical efficiency more important. Therefore, this paper attempts to survey the English learning strategies of Vocational School Freshmen. It tends to investigate which strategy they use most and the difference in the use of language strategies among groups with different majo(rart & science). By analyzing the result of the survey, the paper tries to discuss the vocational school freshmen use the strategies in their English learning. In order to strengthen the goal of Higher Vocational English Teaching, the author puts forward some instruction in English learning strategies that facilitate language acquisition.In recent years, language teachers are focusing more intently on the role of the learner in the process. The"methods"that the learner employs to internalize and to perform the language are as important as the teacher's methods—or more so. We call this the principle of strategic investment that learner can make in their own learning process. Learning strategies play a vital role in the language acquisition process and affect the Chinese Vocational School Freshmen in learning English.The analysis of the English language usage condition of vocational school freshmen shows that they have not yet reached the requirement of the"level"(to communicate with foreigners freely). In the use of language learning strategy, the compensation category (e.g. guessing, paraphrasing when encountering a knowledge barrier) has the highest mean, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, affective, social and memory strategies. Different group of major of China's vocational school freshmen uses the learning strategies with a little different type and frequency.What distinguishes this research from any previous ones is a contrast of the strategy usage condition between the different groups of different majors. The author want to research the differences of English learning between art major and science major students for a long time. She put forward a desire to search for the English learning strategy after reading a large number of books and dissertation at home and abroad. As a result, there are similarities and differences in English learning strategies used by art major or science major students. In order to strengthen the instruction of higher vocational English teaching, this thesis gives some suggestion on English teaching.
