This thesis is intended to make a comparative study between Xu Yuanchong's and Ezra Pound's practice of translating classical Chinese poetry from" the perspective of translation aesthetics and to employ skopos theory to explore their different translation purposes.Classical poetry, a gem in the treasure house of Chinese literature, is a symbol of cultural beauty. Thus classical Chinese poetry translation into English is a translation of beauty to some extent. And Xu and Pound have been widely claimed to be very successful in the transfer of beauty embedded in poetry. For this reason, this thesis explores Xu's and Pound's translation practice on the basis of translation aesthetics. Also skopos theory is employed to analyze the causes of the differences in Xu's and Pound's transfer of the beauty of classical poetry, with the conclusion that a successful translator, aiming at introducing his culture, should develop language abilities and awareness of culture, improving his aesthetic sense of language and culture. This thesis consists of six chapters:After the introductory chapter which gives a brief introduction to the thesis, is the chapter focusing on literature review, in which the author summarizes Xu's and Pound's poetry translation theories, other scholars' poetry translation theories as well as the theoretical framework of the thesis. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 form the main part of the thesis, which deals with how Xu and Pound transfer the form beauty and non-form beauty of poetry respectively. Chapter 5 is an analysis of differences between Xu's and Pound's versions from the perspective of skopos theory. Chapter 6, a concluding one, is a summary of the whole thesis.
