In the evolution and development of the human being, the relationship betweenthe human being and nature is opposite as well as interdependent. The human beingseems to have already broken away from nature after 2 million years' surviving fightwith nature and other living creatures. The 19th and 20th century saw the boom ofscience and technology, the consuming materials were becoming prosperous. In themeantime, the ecological disasters caused by science and technology have made thehuman being re-examine the relationship between the human being and nature.Ecological literature has sprung up. Literature is a branch of the humanities. It canrectify the souls and concepts of the people and appeal to people to create morereasonable space for nature, to maintain balance between modern man and nature, and therefore to realize a high degrce of harmony between the environment in whichpeople live and the ecological environment. In such circumstances, ecocriticismcomes into being. Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature andthe natural environment. With ecological consciousness rising as its most importanttask, ecocriticism focuses on environmental protection. It is also one of its mainresponsibilities to re-interpret the classic works. Ernest Hemingway is one of theclassic writers who attract the author's attention.Ernest Hemingway is now recognized as the most important and influentialAmerican novelist of the 20th century. In the past few decades, experts and scholarsat home and abroad have shown great interest in this writer and his works. In recentyears, critical circles abroad have started to study the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and the natural world, whereas few people in China have ever touchedthis field. Ernest Hemingway's works with the African theme are very remarkableamong all his literary writings. They root in the mysterious continent of Africa, thusthey take on more foreign outlooks and customs than his other works. Green Hills ofAfrica is one of his representative works concerning his African life. Therefore thisthesis is to select this book to make a tentative analysis of Hemingway's view ofnature. From the standpoint of the ecocriticism, Ernest Hemingway is a writer withparadoxical attitude to nature. It is hoped that this thesis will help nurture and fosterpeople an appropriate sense of engagement with and responsibility for oursurroundings, as well as all its human and non-human inhabitants. It is also themotive of this thesis to make a slight contribution to enrich the study of this greatwriter.
