The debate between foreignization and domestication as the extension of literal translation and free translation has been lasting for quiet a long time. Literal translation and free translation are the discussion on the level of language. However, foreignization and domestication are the problem on the level of culture, political, poetry and language as well. This paper adopts the markedness theory as the basic theoretical framework to elaborate that foreignization and domestication are not two binary constraints. The relationship between marked translation and unmarked translation is a continuum, besides these two kinds of translation can be converted under certain conditions. The author tries to illustrate the relationship between foreignization and domestication in a new perspective in order to solve the increasingly fierce debate between them by stepping out of the dilemma.
