World Tourism Organization (WTO) predicted in 2005 that Chinawould be the world's largest tourist destination by the year 2020. Touristmaterial, as a major medium of providing information about touristattractions for tourists, will contribute a lot to China's tourismdevelopment.Schema theory is a body of ideas which has passed form psychology, through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and discourse analysis, into translation. Its basic claim is that a new experience is understood by comparison witha stereotypical version of a similar experience held in memory. The newexperience is then processed in terms of its deviation from thestereotypical version, or conformity to it.~1Schema (plural form: schemata)makes a reference to interpret the new information, predict the followingtext, and to decode how knowledge is presented. Most tourist translations have been dealt with western theories suchas Systematic-functional theory (Halliday), Relevance theory(S&W),Skopos theory (Vermeer), Information theory, Semiotics, Cross-cultureCommunication theory. However, the study of tourist translation from theperspective of cognitive psychology is comparatively rare. Therefore, thisthesis attempts to apply schema theory to the C-E translation of touristmaterials, which mainly describes the psychological process of tourist translation, compares three types of schemata embodied in both Chineseand English tourist materials, and accordingly suggests translationstrategies and methods. This thesis consists of four chapters besides an introduction and aconclusion. The introductory part gives a brief review of the background andsignificance of the study, as well as some questions to be raised for theresearch.Chapter one introduces in brief the schema theory and its featuresand classification which the author will apply to her research.Chapter two analyzes the relationship between schema theory andtourist translation. It firstly presents the mistranslations in touristmaterials and introduces basic knowledge about tourist translation whichtranslator should bear in mind, then examines the working mechanism ofschemata in translation and describes the schemata translation process oftourist material, finally discusses schemata factors affecting touristtranslation.Chapter three makes a contrastive study on three types of schematabetween Chinese and English tourist materials. It explores the course oftheir differences in the perspective of Jung's nationality archetypes andlists and analyzes the differences in aesthetic schema, cultural contentschema and formal schema respectively. Chapter four presents different translation strategies and methodsguided by three different types of schemata. The last reaches a conclusion that schema theory does shed newlights on C-E translation of tourist materials and the study of translator'spsychological process, therefore translator's schemata about touristtranslation need more efforts made on it.
