This thesis attempts to inspect the most engrossing English novel ofLin Yutang, Moment in Peking. Through the original novel, we focus ourattention on it's three different Chinese versions,they are Zheng Tuo andYing Yuanjie's joint version,Zhang Zhenyu's version and Yu Fei'sversion.The author embarks on the nowadays accepting condition of thisnovel,in order to trace it's process of being popularized;and attempts touse this sort of reading to probe into how our translators should deal withthe positioning of classic work's translation.The whole thesis consists of three parts:The first part is emphasizing on the original intention and reason ofwriting this novel of Lin Yutang, and showing the novel's achievements:in our homeland, even more in the world; and pointing out the course ofthe novel being translated back to the writer's mother tongue,is also thecourse of it being popularized,which is a so awkward situation for it.The second part is trying to sort a clue, for analyzing anddemonstrating the main process of this novel's being popularized which isdue to the three different Chinese versions came out in the differentperiod.The third part is emphasizing on proving the author's point above,by detailed reading from the original work of Lin Yutang to the threeChinese versions; and on analyzing the awkward effect the three Chineseversions's translation makes out, while this effect is depended on thedifferent translators how to position the original work.In the remaining part,the author uses the method which is differentfrom reading on the Chinese versions of Moment in Peking to do theresearch, by looking back upon the English original work,and doing detailed reading on the three different versions.In this way, the authordraws the conclusions that while the translators positioning andprocessing the translation, they pulled the original novel into the hell ofbeing popularized.The author hopes this sort of reading will help thetranslation of this novel in the future,and will establish its value andsignificance.
