Being a writer and translator,Lin Yutang enjoys a high reputation in the literary world home and abroad.Moment in Peking,which is one of his representative works,has caused uproar in America upon its publication.And it is called one of the classic works of modern Chinese novels.Because the theme and contents are rooted in Chinese culture,most of its English creative expressions are based on the Chinese translation.At the same time,in order to express the Chinese culture better,the translators have to render their English translations to be more culturally tinted.As a literary work mixed with translation and creation,Moment in Peking provides profound perspectives for modern translation researchers.Nowadays,there exist several translation theories that lead the circle of translation,such as Skopos theory,Nida' s dynamic equivalence translation theory,theory of linguistic adaptation and the theory of faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance of Yan Fu.All these theories can give guidance in the translation of cross-cultural works.And under these theories,two translation strategies,which are domestication and foreignization,that have always been the focus of the field of translation.This paper firstly analyzes the rationale and significance of the study and then introduces the novel-Moment in Peking,its author and translator with a brief introduction of previous researches that scholars have done.By understanding the writer and writing background deeper,readers can better get the essence of the book.After that,the paper gives a brief explanation of the theoretical basis-theories and strategies that applied in the translation and then makes case study from cross-cultural perspectives of Lin Yutang' s Moment in Peking.This paper aims to analyze the novel in relation to the two translation strategies under the theories,and eventually gets the result that domestication and foreignization exist at the same time and are both used in the translation of cross-cultural works.The author also wants to give some enlightenment and help for Chinese researchers on translation.
