Existentialist philosophy, originating from Kierkegaardin the first half of 19th century and going to acme in the firsthalf of 20th century, is the typical product of era, and alsothe abstract summarization and record of over one-centuryfierce change in the transferring of traditional Europe tomodern Europe. However, the Munch's painting that emerged inthe late 19th and early 20th century is the most specific and vividrecord of this era, and the philosophers and ideologistsincluding Schopenhauer and Nietzsche have deeply influencedthe existentialism. The Munch's painting is not only theartistic record of the same era, moreover, as described byexistentialist philosophy, Munch is a philosopheric artist, which is the distinct difference between other artists and him.If we transfer the painting of Munch into letters, its embodiedideological concepts have stupendous consistency withexistentialist philosophy, that is, his paintings containstrong existentialist consciousness. The inter-reading ofexistentialist philosophy and Munch's painting is the most realrecord of that era. Besides the era they coexisted in, thereasons for this also include the direct influence of ideologyof Kierkegaard in the artistic creation of Munch. And the real expression of his life experience into the form of arts is justthe understanding of existentialist philosopher on arts. In thecomplicated world of paintings of Munch, the realistic sorrowand suffering in this world, the death consciousness everywhere, the dread in deep soul, the evil women and cruel carnal desireare the main threads penetrating the artistic spirit, and thesefour aspects are just those which have been considered andexpounded repeatedly by existentialist philosophers includingNietzsche and Schopenhauer.
