With the development of the policy of reform and opening-up inChina, same as in other aspects of our social life, the field of culture andart has been strongly influenced by the modern culture and art from thewestern civilization, among which the field of music has been affectedthe most. The most striking case is the fast popularization of western popmusic in China, which has a profound impact upon generations of youngpeople in modern China.Under such background, a phenomenon that deserves our attention isthe publicity and development of jazz music in China. Compared withother western pop music and rock and roll, jazz entered China relativelylater, with its influence not as wide and extensive as the former two formsof music currently. But as far as the profoundness of its influence and thesignificance of its theories and practice are concerned, the impact of jazzmusic is much deeper than the former two. As one of the most important"root" of the western pop music, jazz has been called "classical amongthe pop music" by the western professionals."Classical", "theoretical value", "innovation of the expressionforms", "innovation of the instruments and forms", "remarkable foldmusic uniqueness", etc. such many characteristics of jazz determine it'smore important value than the simple nature of fashion and entertainmentwhen it was spread and accepted in China. People are gradually realizingthat as one of the root of western pop music, it plays a significant role inthe structure, music forms, theoretical basis, performance practice andinstrument innovation. In the meantime, it was discovered by peopleengaged in music research and education that there is a close linkbetween jazz music and western traditional and modern music.The structure of jazz comes largely from the traditional music,especially its chores. Based on that, it's been modified and developed with new unique creations, such expanding and developing the traditionalchore theories.Centering the basic features of jazz chores, this essay gives anillustration of their different aspects. It also offers a key discussion of theconnection and differences between them and traditional chores.The essay is divided into five parts. As the key to the essay, thepreface gives guidance through the entire essay. It gives an overallintroduction to the cultural and historic background of the origin of jazzmusic. The body of the essay consists of three chapters, with the first andthe second being the focus. The first chapter discusses the basis of jazzchores—tune forms and melodies; the second chapter deals with thestructure and ways of application of jazz chores. The above mentionedchapters offer illustrations to two core issues respectively—"tune basisand "chore structures". The third chapter deals with the ways of putting ittogether of jazz chores. In the closing part, a summary of the whole essaywas given, looking forward into the theoretical and practical significanceto China's current music education and practice of the knowledge andresearch of jazz music.
