This thesis intends to probe into the nominal substitute(s) in Chinese functionally parallel to one in English, which is mainly conducted by means of examining the devices employed both in English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations within the framework proposed by Halliday & Hasan in Cohesion in English, and to make a contrastive study between them.In accordance with the research purposes, the current study consists of three parts. It starts with an investigation into the Chinese realizations corresponding to the nominal substitute one in English-Chinese translation with a view to finding possible nominal substitutes in Chinese. Based on the findings achieved in the previous part, the second part proceeds to make a further inquiry into these possible nominal substitutes in Chinese through examining their English versions together with other evidence. Then a brief account of differences and similarities between nominal substitutes in English and Chinese is provided. The major findings made in this study are that的can be considered as a counterpart in Chinese of the substitute one although there are great differences between them, whereas者actually plays a cohesive role as a general noun. And it is found out that although nominal substitution is a common cohesive device both in Chinese and English, there is no one-to-one correspondence in either English-Chinese or Chinese-English translation. That is to say, they often involve conversion of cohesive devices. The reason may be attributed to the differences in using the substitute one in English and的in Chinese as well as the fact that they belong to entirely different language systems.
