Shengjing is an important translation work of Zhufahu, a Buddhismscripture translator in the time of Western Jin Dynasty. The language inthe Chinese version of Shengjing is very symbolic. With the GrandChinese Dictionary as the frame of reference, this paper briefly studiesthe disyllabic and polysyllabic words of Shengjing in the traditionalway of explaining words in classics, and in the way of modemlexicological theories. And it studies these words in the followingaspects. Firstly it surveys all the words in the book in order to know thedistribution status of the monosyllabic words, disyllabic words andpolysyllabic words, and to know the ratio of new words and old words.Secondly, it analyzes the new disyllabic and polysyllabic words in thelight of word-building and explore the source of these words. Thirdly, itresearches the different ways in which the new meanings of the old wordscome into being. And finally it examines the word-building of thedisyllabic and polysyllabic words, mainly of parataxis category andaffixation category.
