The Sound and the Fury is considered one of the most successful works of William Faulkner. It testifies to the full Faulkner's attainment and artistic gift in narrative technique. The image of Caddy characterized in this work is a tribute to Faulkner's innovative exploitation of the approach of indirection. Characterizing Caddy's image in this way helps to realize Faulkner's ideal of literary characters: the image of Caddy comes alive in the minds of the readers while she remains hidden from the foreground all along. This thesis aims to analyze the role of unreliable narrators in the making of Caddy and prove with examples that unreliable narrators do play as a pivotal role in the making of central character as reliable narrators do.
