Dialogue Between Fujian Scholar-bureaucrats And The Missionary Of Jesuit In Late Ming

In 1624, with the help of Ye Xianggao, a Min scholar-bureaucrat, Giulio Aleni, the missionary of Jesuit, began to preach in Fujian province. His work The Records of Debate In Fuzhou, which records the dialogues between the Min scholar-bureaucrats and him, referring to the culture between China and the western countries, the philosophy, the religion, and the like, evoked a great response in Fujian province. On the basis of culturtral exchange between Fujian Province and the western countries in the late Ming Dynasty, this thesis aims to discuss three issues from the perspective of decoding "cultural dialogues". Firstly, the reason that caused the dialogue between Fujian culture and the western culture with the maritime and mercantile characteristic. In other words, what is the cultural background that aroused the dialogue? Secondly, the cultural discrepancy between China and the western countries caused by the cultural misunderstanding between Giulio Alen and the Min scholar-bureaucrats, and what is the reason that caused that discrepancy? Thirdly, from The Roetry Collections Manifesting Jesuit, AN Antho logy of Writings Exposing Heterodoxy, the response caused by the cultural misunderstanding and dialogue. And then this thesis will use this response to analyze why the people of Fujian province wandered between the Chinese and western culture.From the perspective of the cultural acceptance, it was the need of themselves that Min scholar-bureaucrats treated the western culture with an enlightened attitude and misunderstood the Catholicism. The need was caused by the disappointment of the moral and politics and the anxiety of the existence of the Min culture. It was the Catholicism that stimulated the desire of the Min scholar-bureaucrats in the predicament to have dialogues. Having the complicated cultural experience, those Min scholar-bureaucrats understand the Catholicism differently. The different understandings proved the hard decision they made when they faced the multi-cultural concepts and displayed the extraordinary enchantment in that time. Based on the dialogue between Fujian scholar-bureaucrats and Catholic missionaries, this thesis presents the historical complexion and richness in the dialogue of the heterogeneous cultures from the cultural predicament that experienced by Min scholar-bureaucrats, and reveals the imprint of Fujian scholar-bureaucrats, which were left by the conflicts and integration of the culture between China and western countries in late Ming Dynasty. At the same time, this thesis gives us enlightenment: when cultures encounter, only with positive, communicative and appreciative attitude, they can benefit each other.
