Image Expression Under The Market Mechanism

This paper focuses on Chen Kaige film's tragic connotation, while he is the representative figure of the fifth-generation directors. Combining with the tragedy's causes, tragedy's spirit and also Chen Kaige's pursuit of unique ideal arts and image's aesthetics, the author superficially probes into Chen Kaige film's tragic connotation and specific character. According to the few but classical films of Chen Kaige, the author roughly divided the tragic connotation into rebel and opposed personality, then fatherly based on the story's conflicts, to analyze Chen's concerns about humanity and also uneasiness about culture and history. At the same time, from society and industry's perspective, film is a peculiar kind of industry, it can survive and develop unless under the commerce's mode and rule. This paper doesn't confine to tragic world which is produced by Chen, but extends to find reasons from the panoramic background of society and changes of the times, and what's more, this paper shows changes of Chen Kaige film's tragic connotation, related image's impression and also his persistence or compromise to his ideal arts which are affected by the market rule, commerce profits and aesthetic appreciation.
