Modern Times first published in Shanghai in 1932, it's the most powerful large-scale literature and art publication after the Battle of Songhu. It also takes an important role in the early 1930s. Based on the study of some predecessors, this thesis explores the orientation of Modern Times.This thesis is divided into three parts.Chapter one presents the start publication of Modern Times. The commercial background and the chief author's wide circle acquaintances, decide that Modern Times have congenital non-coterie character. But the openness of Shanghai and the experience of Shi Zhecun, make Modern Times gradually shape its coterie character.Chapter two studies the translation and introduction activity in Modern Times. By analyzing the number of translation and introduction activity, results obtained are Modern Times have distinct modernity. It shows coterie character of Modern Times.Chapter three is an analysis of novels in Modern Times. It publishes various styles of modern Chinese novels, creates a liberal, all-embracing literary environment. It shows comprehensive character of Modern Times. In all these novels, the most absorbing is new-sensual novel; it's fostered and brought up by Modern Times. The new-sensual novel shows the coterie character of Modern Times.The authentic appearance of Modern Times is complicated. From the view of background, translation activity and novels, we draw a conclusion that Modern Times is a comprehensive journal with coterie character.
