As one of the most important leaders of Yugoslavia in the early yearsof the new nation, Milovan Djilas had made prominent contribution to the independenceof Yugoslavia, to the process of breaking away from the Stalinism and looking for theirown socialist mode. In later time, he was considered as a bad man who disseminatedliberalism and anarchism because of the big difference between him and Tito about thesocialist basic political problems. And at last he were removed from office and expelledfrom the Yugoslav League of Communists'. Though he was imprisoned many timesbecause of his words, he never gave up his thoughts. Djilas was called as arepresentative of the "dissident" in the west when he was regarded as a traitor betrayingthe communism enterprise in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Europe nations. Then, what heretic words had Djilas said? What the main content of his thoughts? Why did hechoose such a way that can not return? For long time, because of the ideology, therewere few domestic scholars regarding the reasons of the questions above. Even if somepay attention to it, they treated as a negative example and criticized with lessobjectiveness. Until resent years, Professor Kong Hanbing of Peking University carriedout her research only on the concept of "the new class" in Djilas's thoughts. Therefore, there has been an academic vacuum in China that introducing and commenting Djilas'sthoughts more comprehensive and more systematical with an objective standpoint. Thispaper of mine wants to make up the flaw and hope to provide some help to the relatedresearch. I will realize this goal from following three aspects: Firstly, put the mainarguments of Djilas in order as clear as I can and display them to readers. Secondly, analyze the reason why such thoughts can arise from Djilas's mind. Thirdly, carry onsome short consideration to Djilas phenomenon. All of these will be carried out by theChinese and English material that I can find. This paper can be divided into five parts:The first part is about a brief introduction of Djilas's whole life and the currentresearch situation about the theme both in China and abroad. The second part talks about the Yugoslavia's break with the Soviet Union. AfterYugoslavia founding its new nation, the contradictory between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union intensified day by day and at last the Soviet Union expelled Yugoslaviafrom the Cominform. Thus, the Yugoslav people were compelled to try to find out thesocialist road of their own and then, they broke with Stalinism thoroughly. Djilas hadplayed a very important role as a main leader of his country during that period. The third part concems with the conflict between Djilas and Tito. During theperiod when Yugoslavia constructed its own socialism independently and carried out apolemic war on theories with the Soviet Union, Djilas made more and more differentviews with Tito and the other Party leaders gradually. He broke with Tito finally afterdeclaring a series of different views on socialist system and the bureaucrat stratum. The fourth part will argue about the main thoughts of Djilas and give somecomments. This part is the key point of the paper. I will talk about Djilas's explanationon "the new class" and make the concept "the new class" a few comments by myself. Moreover, I'll try my best to find out the shortage of the concept and display the viewson the basic problems of socialism of Djilas. The fifth part will analyze the reasons why such thoughts arose from Djilas's mindand carry on some short consideration to Djilas phenomenon. There are three mainfactors can be discuss. One is the history factor, also is the domestic history situation'sinfluence to Djilas's thoughts in the early years of Yugoslav reform. Another reason isindividual factor of Djilas, especially his temperament characteristic. It played animportant role in the process of Djilas's thoughts growing. Moreover, I glad to talkabout something on Djilas and his unfortunate destiny in the end of the paper.
