Part I An Event-Related Potentials Study for Mathematics Cognition in Normal ChildrenObjective By analyzing the feature of ERP in children evoked by simple calculation and answer judgment, to explore the processes of mathematics cognition in children .Methods Using simple additions and subtractions within twenty as visual stimulus, twenty grade-two pupils and twenty grade-five pupils were investigated respectively.Result 1,ERP waveforms and components are coincident for two groups , calculation ERP components includes N1,P2,N2,P3,N3, judgment includes N1,P2,N2,P3. 2,In calculation, The declining branch of N2 for grade-five fall faster than that of grade-two, and the latency of P3 for grade-five is advance. 3,In answer judgment, wrong answers elicited more negative N2 than that of correct answers, and there is no difference between two groups in P3. 4,When calculating, two hemispheres correlative areas all participate, frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital regions are active one after the other, in late phase, primarily focus in forehead,parietal-occipital areas .Conclusions ERP waveforms and components are steady and coincident for two grades Children, the difference mainly focus on the declining branch of N2 and the latency of P3; The mental processes of answer judgment are different from these of calculation, and there are differences between the judgments for right and wrong answer; Most of areas in cortex network system participate in calculation Partâ…¡An Event-Related Potentials Study for Mathematics Cognition in Children with EpilepsyObjective By comparing the feature of ERP in epileptic children with these in normal children evoked by simple calculation and answer judgment ,to understand the extent of damage in cognition function of epileptic children, so as to find out a means can more objectively evaluate the cognitive function. Methods Twenty-three epileptic children and twenty-three normal children were examined separately , and analyzing the ERPs evoked by calculation and answer judgment.Result 1,ERPs waveforms and components are coincident for two groups children , calculation ERPs components includes N1,P2,N2,P3,N3;judgment includes N1,P2,N2,P3; 2,In calculation and answer judgment, as a whole, the latency of P3 for epileptic children is delayed; 3,For part of epileptic children , the latency of P3 is normal ,but in lower level; 4,In this experiment, the evaluation results of ERP are coincident with these of IQ.Conclusions The mental processes of calculation and answer judgment for epileptic children are same to normal children , but the cognition function of epileptic children is destroyed as a whole ;The ERP technique can be used to evaluate mathematics cognitive function of epileptic children.
