The historical play in 1930's~1940's during the War of Resistance against Japan triggered the discussion about the function of historical play and contributed the forming of the tradition of make-the-past-serve-the-present in Chinese modern historical play. But the much attention paid on the utilitarian function of a play can not solute those social problems while harming its achievement on art. Therefore, pursuing for the utilitarian function of a play is totally unnecessary. History itself contains abundant of dramatic nature. These dramatic natures buried in history could create a strong play if they were dug out and of course, should be served by all kinds of composing methods. Researching the aesthetic characters can help enjoying the unique charming of historical play. An outstanding historical play mustn't be a tool of polity, contrarily, it should express the spirit of history and knock into people's heart by an independent artistic status.
