Vocabulary learning is one of the objectives of Senior English teaching. But the fact is that many senior students' vocabulary levels are far below where they should be. And discrepancy turns to be greater: This has drawn close attention of many linguistists and researchers working in this field. Based on a questionaire investigation and theory study, this paper has made a brief study on Normal School students' English vocabulary learning. It focuses largely on vocabulary strategies, illustrating the necessity of vocabulary strategies, so that the concrete approaches and learning strategies can be determined. The experiment proves that vocabulary training based on strategies instruction is one of the effective ways of improving senior high school students' vocabulary level. It also makes some useful suggestions based on the survey and experiment. Five sections are included in this thesis.In the first section, a brief introduction is given, studies and researches on the improvement of senior students' vocabulary effectiveness are analyzed.In the second section, a theory study is made. Based on cognitive learning theory and learning styles, the paper illustrates the significant role that the learning strategies play in the second language aquisition. Vocabulary learning strategies employment results in the improvement of reading , writing, speaking and listening ability. It comes to light that the students should learn and use vocabulary learning strategies in order to improve their integrating language abilities.In the third section, 41 students from Normal School who are equal to senior students as the subjects for a test and a questionaire investigation, which are developed on the basis of vocabulary learning strategies. According to the results of the test and the questionaires, the students are divided into three types of learners. One is audio learner, the other two are visual learner and tactile learner. Different type of learners are instructed to use different learning strategies. Statistic results show that the strategies for the audio learners and visual learners are effective. Comparatively speaking, the tactile learners haven't reached the expectant goals. These results also support the idea that vocabulary learning strategies are very important and effective in improving the students' integrating abilities and reducing discrepancy.The fourth section is the conclusion. It is found out that the majority of Normal School students fail to use learning strategies in vocabulary learning. Views are held that lack of vocabulary learning strategies is one of the main factors that affect the improvement of language ability. The results of the experiment made by the author support the idea. Results also show that strategies based instruction and training are practical and valid.The fifth section is limitations and suggestions for future studies.
