China has a great number of nationalities, which leads to various kinds of ballads all over the country. Although ballads in Dangtu, Anhui, which consist of work shanties, folk songs and ditties, are just a drop in the ocean of ballads in China, they have distinct regional features and unique cultural and aesthetic values. With the progress of the society and the development of science and technology, the "original" surviving environment on which ballads depend becomes less and less desirable. The research on ballads in Dangtu is of great realistic significance to the preservation, inheritance and enhancement of excellent folk culture in China.
