Exploration In Well

Japanese contemporary author Haruki Murakami is a figuration-prefer writer. There are some profound keywords continuously used in his novels, including"sheep-liked man","mouse","elephant"and etc. While there is another ignored word used in all of his novels up to"Kafka on the Shore"except"After Dark", that is the word"Well". Based on collecting large numbers of disquisitions observing on the word"well", I found most of them connect"well"with Sigmund·Freud's id theory, and among them only Prof. Sun Shulin connected"well"with Lao-Tzu's philosophy. In my opinion, Mr. Murakami's"well"beyond these. This thesis researches the function of"well"and analyses the usage of"well"as an image.Owing to the great numbers of Mr. Murakami's works, I selected and analyses the"wells"from his river novels to narrate the thesis clearly. In my research, I found"well"played the most important role in"The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle". Then I mainly analyzed this novel and glanced at his other river novels.Mr. Murakami's works imbued with the feelings of comedown and loneliness, meanwhile his works constantly transform to the direction of concerning the society. And in the inditing of"The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle", Mr. Murakami also melted the factors of history and society, which upmostly performed the well's function. When producing this novel, Mr. Murakami witnessed the House election campaign of Aum Supreme Truth in his home in Shibuya, experienced the Gulf War in U.S., events of Matumoto sarin, Hanshin earthquake, Tokyo subway sarin and etc. Influenced by these events, Mr. Murakami turned to pay attention to society, and he found that there were so many problems in the reality society which raised from human's deepest consciousness. As a society-concerned author at that time, he continually looked for the settlement of these problems, which promoted him performed his instinct as a writer and deep into human's sub-consciousness to seek the answer. As a figuration-prefer writer, Mr. Murakami appropriately compared"well"as a vehicle heading to the different dimension. Under the author's guide, the"well"leads readers travel through the space time, experience the feelings of comedown, loneliness and death with Mr. Murakami; while Mr. Murakami leads readers deep into sub-consciousness and seek settlements in"wells". He unplugs the stopple, recovers the"well"and the world behind it, and achieves his historical mission as a writer.
