Yu Dafu is a prestigious contemporary novelist of China.Yu Dafu found his inspiration from water and water let him have a better understanding of life. It's typical of him to convey his feelings through water. In his works he describes the physical forms of water such as rain, snow, fog and frost as well as psychological forms of water. All in all we can see various water forms in his novels from river, lake and sea to tears, liquor and tea. This is his unique writing style which we call"water narration"pattern. Because of the splendid description of water we can find poetry and beauty here and there in his works. In his novels water has multiple cultural and life connotations. It is a symbol of love, female, paradise and so on.Water is one of the most important images in the culture of the mankind. Over thousands of years many people have generated the profound thoughts from it. It is the same with Yu Dafu. Water contains his profound insights and comprehension of the world and life. There are many reasons why he has such a unique writing style. The thesis starts with"water"and explores the distinctive"water narration"pattern, trying to analyze the possible reasons and study his creation psychology from a different perspective. This text mainly consists of two parts. The first part is the scrutiny of text, which will dissertate the"water narration"pattern systematically from the following three ways.Firstly, most of Yu Dafu's novels were set in watersides. Similar plots are always found in different watersides or seasides. Also, the physical entities such as rain, snow, cloud and fog in the novels contribute a lot to the expression of feelings and offer the backgrouds of different stories. Besides, the psychological forms such as tears, liquor and tea are beneficial a lot to the themes of different novels, too.Secondly, Yu Dafu always conveys different feelings through"water"in his novels, such as love, hatred, sorrow and pleasure, which is the most common and significant feature. In the novels, the leading characters are often trapped deeply in loneliness, vagrancy and inanity. In order to escape from the affliction, they usually seek comfort from love and women. He has his unique style to express love.Different patterns of water --- snow, bathing and sea are used to present different sorts of love.Intellectuals who are helpless in the painful real world usually regard clean water as paradise. The second part is mainly about the complex reasons for the"water narration"pattern. This artile tries to analyse the reasons why he chose water as the best carrier to express the thoughts of life in three aspects.First comes from the influence of the Wu regional culture.Wu was a small ancient kingdom, which was located in the south of lower reach of Changjiang River. Wu regional culture is water culture in nature because water is of great significance to the customs and manners of the local people, so intellectuals here have the unique writing style. Yu Dafu who was born and brought up here, was inevitably influenced by the"water culture"and gradually formed his distinctive writing style. His unique writing style is closely related to his living experiences. He was born in the place near the beautiful Fu Chun river. When he was young he went to Hangzhou to study which is famous for the West Lake. Afterwards to further his study he went to Japan, an island contry east of China. In brief, these living experiences contribute to his unique writing style a lot. That's why he has the deep emotions with water. The West Lake is the psyche of the Wu regional culture and her special geographical environment cultivated the androgynous roles of the local people. The West Lake was of great value in Yu Dafu's life and shaped his lofty character and elegant writing style.Second, the traditional intellectuals had deep emotions associated water and it was inherited and reflected. The water culture has a long history and it dates back to ancient time. It's common for chinese writers to express their feelings through water and the deep emotions associated with water just like a bridge between ancient times and modern times. The Chinese intellectuals usually express their feelings and emotion through water, which has become an elegant and classical tradition. As their understanding of water becomes deeper and deeper, people have gradually formed rational thoughts.Water is often considered as an important symbol of sorrow , love female and marriage. The traditional"water culture"was passed down from one generation to another, which had a great influence on him, so it is typical of him to convey his feelings in his works.Third, his works are a reflection of his real life. His pessimistic character and the way of thinking are closely related to his misfortune of early years. He was lack of love from his family and led a hard life, what's worse,he suffered from pulmonary disease all the year round, which in all result in his self-humiliation.In the meantime, he lived at the beginning of the 20th century, when the eastern culture met the western culture, which had a deep influence on his life and literature. In his time there was a frequent cultural exchange between chinese and western culture, which influenced his writing style as well. Because of the special cultural background, his"water narration"pattern has the feature of the end of the 20th century. Yu Dafu is a genius who read many books both at home and abroad. So he gave"water"a unique interpretation both classical and modern. This also reflected that as a prestigious scholar he understood the world in the unique way at the...
