Wuthering Heights is the only novel that Emily Bront? wrote throughouther short life. It is such a strong, agonizing, powerful as well as puzzlingbook that from the day of its birth till the present, readers and critics all overthe world have been greatly attracted by it. A great deal of deep explorationfrom every critical perspective to this novel has been carried out. And thestudy of the novel remains unexhausted. Therefore, this dissertation discussesand analyzes this great novel from the aspects of tragedy, especially on theartistic and aesthetic effects author created in this great tragedy of WutheringHeights. The subject is approached in the light of the development of literarytheories on the elements of tragedy from Aristotle down to the twentiethcentury. The purpose of the dissertation is to explore how Wuthering Heightsis constructed as a tragedy, to enrich the study of Wuthering Heights and tobetter understand and appreciate this great novel from aspects of tragedy.The theoretical basis of the dissertation is tragedy theory. It is theoutcome of investigation of tragedy literature. It has a long history: from thebeginning of the 4th century BC to the 20th century. Based on this theory, thedissertation mainly analyzes the composing aspects of tragedy in WutheringHeights.There are totally four chapters in the dissertation. The first two chaptersmake a brief literary review on the historical development of the tragedytheory. Chapter three applies tragedy theory to analyze the construction oftragedy in Wuthering Heights and techniques used to increase the tragic power. In chapter four the focus is devoted to the reflections of newdevelopment of tragedy theory: psychological description skill andpsychoanalytical criticism so that new orientation of the tragedy in WutheringHeights could be achieved.In a word, through the research of the creation of tragedy in WutheringHeights, the ingeniously conceived tragedy structure and Emily's originalityare studied and appreciated in order that better understanding of the subtletiesand complex psyche of tragedy could be achieved.
