This article mainly covers the study of the image decorations on the ancient painted pottery at mid & up reaches of Yellow River. Though the image decorations in this area account only for a small percentage of all decorations on China's ancient painted pottery in old ages, their special social, historical, cultural and artistic value are more than outstanding since the earliest dynasty was established there. Therefore, it is worthy of study. The image decorations on the ancient painted pottery were the records of the peoples' symbolistic thinking in primitive times. An analysis on the characteristics of the peoples' symbolistic thinking in primitive times may well help us comprehend the multiplicity, obscureness and development of the connotation of the image decorations. The image decorations made on the ancient painted pottery mainly originated from the totem tokens of clan. Carrying out a study on the regional change covered by these decorations and the pattern features of the recombination and integration may contribute to the understanding of the development of clan society at mid & up reaches of Yellow River, and thus help us witness the specially formed social psychology, culture character and historical features of China Clan. Furthermore, studying the abstraction trend of image decorations may inform us of the produce and development of early art.
