Two-valence Transitive Verbs And The Object

The valency of verbs is one of the important theories in modern linguistics. It is generally acknowledged that the theory of the valency of linguistics is founded by the French linguist Lucien Tesniere. The theory is developed by the German. German research in the valency theory breaks through the circle of the traditional grammar and catches the essence of the theory. The valency in the linguistics exerts some influence on the following theory, such as case grammar, relational grammar and TG grammar. This paper reviews the production and development of the valency theory, analyzes and summarizes its application in the modern Chinese language. Explain my own view in some issues like the properties of the valency in linguistics, the kinds of verbs in modern Chinese language and so on. In the research of the valency of modern Chinese verbs, the two-valence transitive verbs are difficult. That's because the quality of this kind of verbs is huge, and various in style. It's difficult to summarize the overall characteristic. On the basis of many researches, this paper focuses on the two-valence transitive verbs and the object, analyzes the common situation of two-valence transitive verbs with one object and the special situations of the two-valence transitive verbs with no object and with two objects. The common situation is the prototype structure. There are two patterns in the two-valence transitive verbs with no object, one is the transformations, and the other is the NP ellipsis. The transformations contain the object moves to the location of the subject, the "Ba" sentence pattern and the "Bei" sentence pattern. Most of the issues in the NP ellipsis are about the empty categories. This paper investigates modern Chinese language in the two patterns, analyzes the reason. There are some disputes in the sentence of the two-valence transitive verbs with two objects. The paper draws the conclusion on the basis of many researches. Analyzes its production reason and formation mechanisms, makes my own analysis to the special circumstances among them. In a word, this paper makes every effort to study various situations, wants to summarize the overall picture of the relation between the two-valence transitive verbs and the objects, plays a certain role on the study of the two-valence transitive verbs.
