Starting from the angel of Dialog, and with Bakhtin's Theory of Dialog and polyphony as theoretical foundations, this article attempts to make a systematic research on the modernity contained in HuFeng's novel theory. The article consists of four chapters all in all. The first chapter vindicates the outstanding contributions HuFeng made to Chinese modern novel criticism. Taking humanity at large as the centre, he insists that "literature is essentially the study of humanity". Criticizing historical rationalism he appeals to people to step off "Hegelian Ghost"; secondly, being a middle man historically, HuFeng ranks between LuXun and LuLing. Having inherited and developed the valuable tradition of the May 4th period, he at the same time digs deeper into realism and fully demonstrates himself as an eminent Chinese modern artist and thinker. Among Hufeng theories, what claims to be the most modern is his advocacy of dialog. Applied to novel theories, it is the attention on and distillation of the "archetypes" that has won national acclaim for Hufeng. This second chapter deals with the proper understanding of and coinage of archetypes. The third and forth chapters centers on Hufeng and his life career in an ascending order. All in all, further study on HuFeng novel theory helps us to have a deeper understanding of HuFeng literary theory, it is also beneficial to the development of Chinese modern novel theory and the evolution of realism in China.Due to the pioneering and the experimenting qualities ,a heated debate has been initiated on whether revolutionary literature should be "pure" or "not pure" inside the leftwing revolutionary literature camp. Consequently, HuFeng was made a crucial character.
