China is now a collaged mixture of the respectively collided cultural labels as tradition/modern/postmodern, east/west/globalization and government/elite/mass. The dialectical relationship between mainstream culture, elite culture and mass culture is accordingly adjusted. Entertainment, an important element in culture systems and marked feature of modern life, makes great contributions for the social development, east and west, especially for the spirit life and culture construction of nations. Faced with the acceleration of globalization, trans-nationalization and modernization, entertainment in China, a reflection of the global entertainment trend, exerts its influence in middle and west China towns and villages, which results in a great change of our traditional life style, appreciating way, communicative mean, interpreting mode as well as general taste. Entertainment, in certain sense, turns into a new cultural paradigm. The opening provokes an inconspicuous transformation of the politics, economics, cultural atmosphere and social mentality, in which the entertainment also under the process of changing and regulation seeking. Nevertheless, it has proved its rationality and inevitability. In the new century, the overrunning of entertainment shows its influence and economical potentials. Yet, the ignorance of its aesthetic value cannot be neglected. In a word, tremendous impacts made by entertainment on the different aspects as culture, politics, economics, morals and aesthetics can be studied as a social symptom. This paper is attempted to transcend the origin, feature, essence, function and its cultural, aesthetic, economical, social meaning of entertainment. By probing into the social background, basic characters, value system, aesthetic motif and developing trend, this paper concludes that a high grade entertainment spirit should be promoted.This paper begins with a general introduction to the culture background of entertainment in global sense and the development process of Chinese entertainment movement. Besides, the theoretical meaning and innovative value will be examined. Chapter one focuses on the explicit phenomenon and culture of entertainment.By a close study of its definition, essence and background, this part will try to find out the dynamical causations of the overrunning of entertainment in 1990s, the content and performances of it, so as to prove that entertainment functions as the new cultural paradigm and the vital part of social life in contemporary China.Chapter two elaborates on the basic characteristic transformation of domestic entertainment culture since 1990 from a culture study perspective. As the most typical form of contemporary culture, the entertainment culture has displayed its conversional characteristics as the replacement of stereotypes by the reality, the deconstruction of elitism by the commonality, the subversion of sublimity by the cannibalization and the transcendence of spirit-oriented by physical-oriented.Chapter three is a value judgment on the function of entertainment. To be more specific, the main question discussed here is that what kind of consequence can entertainment bring about? Despite the common features shared by all the arts as amusement, cognition, civilization and appreciation, entertainment culture possesses more functions as the construction of"soft power"in economics, the mental consolation of general people, and the truth discovery of plain life and the diversity of cultural ecology. Therefore, the realization of its economical and sensational function can only be regarded as a preliminary of its value. The ultimate object of entertainment is no other than to get a high standard mental cultivation and aesthetic taste and to regain the human nature in an age of reason and science.The entertainment age shared by common people is a sign of times. Anyway, the problems existed in entertainment practices cannot be overlooked. A serious observation of entertainment phenomenon is needed to correct and prevent the dissimilation and spiritual corruption. This paper is a reasonable discussion and value judgment of the entertainment culture, which aims to remind the people who addicted to entertainment the importance of"the charm of tension". Finally paper appeals that we must consummate the entertainment theory and complete the entertainment operating system, so we can build rich, health and the entertainment culture which revealing the Chinese native place culture characteristics, according to the concrete national condition of building the China well-off social and the harmonious society.
