The meaning of Word in context is restricted by a variety of elements. Based on the static meaning, the meaning of word is always changing from static conceptual meaning to dynamic pragmatic meaning, and then new stable meaning is formed according to the new dynamic pragmatic meaning. The static meaning is only the form, pragmatic meaning is the carrier and performer of function. Therefore, in real communication, the system of word meaning is not in a closed or static state but in a open and dynamic state. The meaning of a word is varying due to the effect of context and expressed in different variations. As far as human communication is concerned, its realization does rely on the dynamic change of word meaning in use, and the final function of word meaning system is accomplished in application.Based on the study, the paper discloses the nature and the characteristics of pragmatic meaning from the perspective of the definition of pragmatic meaning. ( The pragmatic meaning of word refers to the temperative meaning of word which is given in application according to the conceptual meaning of a word, the purpose of users and the context it occurs.)Firstly, the pragmatic meaning is based on its static meaning and the premise of its existing is context in which it appears. The static meaning provides the basis of concept and content for pragmatic meaning; the context restricts the formation of word meaning from different aspects. The combination of context and the conceptual meaning of word help to form the pragmatic meaning.Secondly, the profiling extent of pragmatic meaning is different. In terms of salience, pragmatic meaning can be fallen into implicit pragmatic meaning and explicit pragmatic meaning; in the view of content, pragmatic meaning can be sorted into metaphor, mytonemy, irony, pun and so forth.Thirdly, pragmatic meaning is changing with the change of the different factors such as users, cultures, societies. Its interpretation requires the help of the context.Fourthly, pragmatic meaning is achieved by violating one or more maxims of conversation according to Cooperative Porinciple of Grice. The violation includes: maxim of quanlity, maxim of quality, maxim of relavance and maxim of manner. It is significant for the proper use of word and full understanding of word meaning to study the pragmatic meaning of word. To the best of my belief, more benefits will be brought to language learning as the further study to it.
