When considering the tourism resources as a whole, they include natural resources, cultural and historical resources and interrelated characteristic social phenomena. Amongst them, cultural and historical resources, comprising famous persons of every type and period and their corresponding achievements, artefacts and objects constitute an important part. Therefore, residences of cultural celebrities are the main carrier for the celebrity culture, which makes them an important and valuable tourism resource. At present, the development of the culture of celebrity concentrates mainly on their former residences. This deserves the readers' interest and attention. The four main principles that China has adopted regarding the exploitation of the residences of cultural celebrities have all brought considerable damage to these former residences. However, this doesn't mean that the readers should abandon this exploitation. What the readers' should pay attention to is how to control the damage of this exploitation and how to protect these ancient residences. Regarding the present situation, the residences of cultural celebrities in modern China are a weak component in the protection of the historical and cultural heritage, taking into consideration that it is just this historical and cultural legacy that has an enormous value and significance. The idea and soul of the British historical and cultural heritage protection are dynamic protection, exploitative protection and effective protection realized through control, guided exploitation and development. To construct a complete and scientific legal system and a relatively perfect cooperative protection system between the government and the people, Great Britain issued the first act of protection in 1882 and promoted the system's development in the following period of more than one hundred years. At the same time, in order to raise money for protection funds, they created as one of the first countries a system of heritage lottery funds. This appeared to be a profitable attempt in solving the problem of funds. Concerning the protection of the ancient residences of famous persons, Great Britain specially founded the 'Blue Card' committee. To indicate their protective status, a blue card will be given to ancient residences that conform to the protection norms. Like this, not only the goal of protection can be reached but also the enthusiasm for the protection of the historical and cultural heritage will be stirred. It is beyond doubt that the English model offers a successful example for the protection of the historical and cultural heritage of our nation. The readers should study this model and learn from it.Based on this, the thesis first draws a comparison between the British and Chinese historical process of the former residences of famous people. Secondly, it compares the protection work conducted by the two countries, considering two factors: the protection scope and standards and the protection mechanisms. Thirdly, starting from the former residence of Lu xun in Beijing and the former residence of George Bernard Shaw in London, the thesis compares from a microcosmic angle the ways in which the two countries protect these residences. As a last point, it put forward some suggestions for the protection of the residences of cultural celebrities in modern China, touching four fields of interest: their legislative and institutional construction, the stimulation of the people's consciousness and enthusiasm for protection, the means for raising protection funds and the training of protection experts.
