The thesis is on the adaptation strategy applied in literary translation from the perspective of the functionalist translation theory. In the theory, the Skopos principle and the Function plus Loyalty principle are two important principles, in which the purpose for the translation of target text is emphasized and the loyalty to the translation of source text is also taken into consideration. Between the two aspects, adaptation strategy is considered one of the translation strategies that can stretch a balance. The thesis takes Xiao Qian's translation of Ulysses as a study case. An analysis on Xiao Qian's translation is carried out on the aspects of style, language and culture. From the analysis, people can get a clear image of the adaptation strategy applied in Xiao Qian's translation and his translation traits as well. Hopefully the thesis could elicit more attention to the translator XiaoQian and his translation works.
