James Joyce's Ulysses has been regarded as a sealed book since the complete version of the book was published in 1922 in Paris,France. Its remarkable stream of consciousness writing skill drew global attentions.Until the year 1994,the full-fledged version of Chinese translation of Ulysses, which was translated by Xiao Qian and Wen Jieruo, was published by Yilin Press.Xiao's translation was readers-centered,adding nearly 6,000 annotations in their translation. As an explicit translation restitution method, annotations can help readers comprehend the intentions of the author of the original text without changing the structure of the original text. This thesis took the annotations in Xiao's translation of Ulysses as the research object. The author of this thesis classified and analyzed the annotations in the translation under the Skopos Theory so as to obtain the general rules of adding annotations and explore how to apply these rules into the translation practice.Xiao and Wen added many kinds of annotations in the translation under the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos Theory, including the annotations to compensate the cultural gaps under the Skopos Rule, the annotations to compensate the understanding gaps under the Coherence Rule and the annotations to compensate the feeling gaps under the Fidelity Rule.Through the analysis, the author of this thesis found out that the annotations is an indispensable part of the whole translation and translators should considerate both the intentions of the author and the savvy of the target readers when adding the annotations.
