The thesis focuses on the study on the connotation and the translation of color words in classical English and Chinese literature from the perspective of Hermeneutics.Color is a bright and colorful appearance in nature, and color-words is a beautiful rainbow of language field. Color-words is gradually endowed with cultural connotations in the language development and belongs to culture-loaded terms for it can reflect the characteristics of culture. English and Chinese have their colorful points of view in the cultural development. As a kind of semiotic system of human communication, language is the carrier of culture, which reflects different cultural psychology of different nations. In the process of recording and transmitting culture, color words cannot avoid being shaped or influenced by culture. So learning about different cultures of different nations, translators need to know some literature—especially classical literature, which are the quintessence and mirror of culture.Several decades ago, most of translation theories were on the basis of the same level: The nature of translation was to transfer one language to another. However, it is known that language is the carrier of culture and any language shows a kind of culture. Translation is to understand and interpret another language, so mistranslation, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation are certainly cultural phenomenon, not a pure language one. Therefore, translation is to transfer culture. In terms of this point of view, the author tries to provide a new theoretic vision for the translation analysis of color words in classical English and Chinese literature from the perspective of Hermeneutics. The reasoning of the paper is realized by deducing the link between Hermeneutics and translation, furthermore, the paper sets up a clear logical relationship between Hermeneutics and translation of cultural texts, and then bridges a gap between hermeneutic translation and Peter Newmark's translation theory by finding out something in common—"meaning"—"how to understand language and how to express in another language."The paper chooses as subject color words in classical English and Chinese literature, including The Book of Songs, Tang Poetry, Song Lyrics, Yuan Qu-poetry, 100 Bible stories, 100 Passages from the Dramatic Writings of Shakespeare, and 100 Great English Poems. According to the qualification of the data collected from classical English and Chinese literature, the author makes the comparison at the level of semantic meaning and cultural connotation, employing Peter Newmark's theory to analyze the translation of color words.At the same time, it is expected that this thesis may throw light on the use of color words in cross-cultural communication, English language teaching and learning, and translation.
