Carnivalization of language is an important linguistic theory encompassing many disciplines, analyzed and generalized from linguistic polyphony and heteroglossia of long novels by Bakhtin. The main characteristics of carnivalization are: no hierarchy, catharsis, overturning and popularizing. Accordingly, plaza language forms its specified characteristics and styles, i.e. a variety of genres, including shouting, talcing an oath, swearing, cursing and all sorts of vulgar speeches.Water Margin is a long historical novel with dense grassroots colour and vivid carnival characteristics. The frequency of carnival speech is higher in the work. Based on a great many of examples of carnival speeches, the thesis researches carnival speech from the semantic and pragmatic perspective.The thesis contains three parts.The first part is about the meaning, genre and literal characteristics of carnival speech. The author defines the research scope of carnival speech in Water Margin, and classifies the genre of carnival speech from the semantic perspective. Vulgarity, banter, colloquialism and heteroglossia of carnival speech are also illustrated in this part.The second part is the pragmatic function of carnival speech in Water Margin. The author induces and illustrates the pragmatic function of carnival speech in Water Margin from the perspective illocutionary act, revealing the wide pragmatic function of carnival speech.The third part is the pragmatic parameter of carnival language in Water Margin. The author explains the influence of gender, social status, character, social culture, politeness, cognition and spectacles on the pragmatic function of carnival language. The author researches carnival speech with scientific attitude of respecting facts. The aim is to promote the multidevelopment of language, making language be the efficient tool of thinking and expressing.
