Poetry, in relation to other artistic forms, is more direct and profound in reflecting life. It is true of the theory of verve in reflecting human life spirit. To explore the life sense contained in the theory of verve, the author approaches it from its ontological life and life spirit of art.In the first chapter-the view of life on ontological "verve", this paper interprets the life sense of the theory of verve from different aspects of Wang Yuyang's life philosophy, his pursuit of life value, his sentiment on life, and his view of life and death reflected in this theory. On the one hand, we see the life philosophy behind Wang's poetry, his life value and pursuits; on the other, by putting it in the specific social background of Qing Dynasty and the river of China's history, we deepen our re-understanding of Chinese traditional literates' cognition and perception on their life. Besides, we get a further understanding of the molding of the social environment of that time on Wang's life spirit and poetry style. The second chapter is about the view of art life of this theory. The theory of verve contains a view of art life of strong national characteristics. It stresses "vitality" in artistic creation. This vitality forms the core of this theory and the lively artistic features of poetry and poets. The vitality is the life of poetry and the theory of verve. The artistic features of this theory turn from stressing affection to stressing tranquility. The theory shows the understanding and pursuing of the freedom of life and art. In our traditional life spirits, time and space are inseparable and just in the free space of art, the theory achieves the transcendence of time and space. The inspiration of art creation emphasized by the theory of verve is realized in a tranquil psychological state, which itself is an activity of life spirit. In this state, the theory accomplishes the pursuit of pure aesthetic art.Harmony is the central concept of Wang's theory of verve in reflecting life spirit. Under the influence of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, harmony is also the core of the life and art life of the theory. The theory of verve is the harmonious unification of poet's cultivation, poetry's creation and appreciation. The beauty of harmony, a pursuit of ancient Chinese people, is Chinese traditional scholars' orientation of life value and aesthetic value, and also the neutralization beauty embodied in Chinese scholars' blending with the nature. It therefore contains strong sense of Chinese life philosophy. This thesis makes a study on the life spirit of the theory of verve as a whole, accordingly deepening our understanding of Chinese art, especially that of the life spirit in poetry and our understanding of scholars' view of life in early Qing Dynasty.
