An Analysis On The Coherence Between Two Conception-the "Nondirective" Of Rogers And "Undo" Of Lao-tzu

Person-centered psychotherapy is a Humanistic psychotherapy which was created by Carl Rogers who is an American psychologist. It is called Nondirective therapy because it emphasizes more nondirective characters than other directive therapies. While"Undo"is a kind of politic strategy which was created by Lao-tzu who was a great thinker in archaic China. Lao-tzu held the thinking that it had better take a nondirective and nonstandard approach. Is there communication between the"nondirective"and"undo"? This is a hot topic in academe, and this study will also answer this question.The main question of this study is emphasizing the communications between the"nondirective"and"undo", based on systemically understanding both Rogers'thinking and Lao-tzu'thinking. It includes three aspects. Firstly, I will analyze the communication of the hypothesis of the human natural contained by the two concepts. Secondly, I will analyze the approaches of the two concepts. Thirdly, I will analyze the aims of the two concepts. But this analysis is based on the premise that both the"nondirective"and"undo"could be thought as an approach to psychotherapy.The First aspect is the hypothesis of human natural. Rogers'view is that the human nature is a kind of inborn tendency of"self-fulfillment". That is to say: everyone has an ability of self-direction and self-grown. And the hypothesis of human nature of"Undo"is a kind of postnatal genuine state. That is to say: everyone has his own original state which should not be disturbed. So the value judgment of the two concepts is kindred, but the essence attribute of the two concepts is dissimilitude. Because the hypothesis of human natural of"nondirective"is a kind of inborn tendency, but the hypothesis of human natural of"undo"is a kind of postnatal state. And the hypothesis of human natural of"nondirective"is an"have"which oppose that there is nothing on human nature, but the hypothesis of human natural of"undo"is"none"which oppose that there are something set on human nature.The second aspect is the method. As a method,"nondirective approach"need that the consultant's own world view is inactive and the consultant should not enact the goal and decide the way for patient. On the contrary,"undo"need someone live on his original and should not disturb other's life. The front is revoking the world view, and the latter is abolishing the world view. As a method,"nondirective approach"need come into other and understand him and accept him; but"undo"need not come into other and only care him outside. The front is"come into", but the latter is"come out". In one word, the"nondirective approach"need coming into patient by revoking the world view, but the"undo"need coming into nature by abolishing the world view. So the"nondirective approach"and"undo"have kindred on literal mean, but have no kindred on essence at all.The third aspect is the progress. The first step of"nondirective approach"is building a kind of"helping relation", and the second step is make the patient grow in this relation, and the last step is make the patient built the same"helping relation"with others. But the first step of"undo"is cultivating consultant's morality, and the second step is building an"undo relation"with others, and the last step is making others cultivate their morality. In one word, the front is from relation to individual and then to relation, but the latter is from individual to relation and then to individual. The jumping-off is different and the keystone is different and the ending is also different.The last aspect is the aim. The goal of"nondirective approach"is making someone build their world view on their own experience. But the goal of"undo"is abolishing any standard of world view and making someone live on their original. In one word, the front is"self-support", but the latter is"self-abolish". These are very different. And this shows the great difference between the culture of occident and the culture of china. That is to say: the occident's culture is individual, but the china's culture is natural.
