George Eliot lived in the 19th century, which is also a particular period of history. In the 19th century, new scientific ideas and social scientific theories abound endlessly. Darwin's theory of evolution, Comte and Spencer's positivism theories as well as the observation and research done by Eliot and her husband George Henry Lewes influenced Eliot deeply. There is a breadth of knowledge of contemporary social and scientific theory in George Eliot's writing. Organic social thinking in George Eliot's novels "MiddleMarch" is the embodiment of this social theory. The first chapter of my paper summarizes the overview of scientific concerns in Middlemarch and inspects the meaning of this Academic research. The second chapter domanstrates the source of organic social theory and its a major development in the 19th century. Social Organic Theory is a social theory which compares human society to the biological organisms. Such social organic theory about personal relationships can be traced back to ancient Greece. Aristotle was the first one to introduce it. By the 19th century, the rapid development of science finally make the metaphor come true. Comte and Spencer were the 19th-century representatives of social organic theoty, and their thoughts have an imperceptible impact on George Eliot. Comte and Spencer believed that human society should be a biological organisms as an organic entity. They advocated using scientific spirit to make sociological research. They had a major impact at the time. Disseminated to the ideological atmosphere in the 19th century, George Eliot grasped their views hidden in the ideological theory, and vividly impressed it in his novels. The third chapter illustrates the manifestation organic social theory in "Middlemarch". This novel has also repeatedly said that the community should be an organic whole, and has a series of organic metaphors, such as "artery", "fibrous tissue," and "roots", "network structure", "epidermal tissue". The author believes that the organic community Eliot thinking can be divided into three mutually reinforcing arguments that these views in his works can be found in the fully proved.â… ,Eliot Constructed of a an interdependent network of organic community in the novel. Everyone in this small town Middlemarch is not a isolated fragment. Everyone's life is part of this organic whole. The entire novel doesn't have ups and downs in the circumstances, and there is no dazzling display of the player. Everyone is unable to extricate itself from the impact of the environment, and can not avoid individual insignificance.Everyone's experience in this small town Middlemarch is not isolated fragments. Everyone's life is indispensable as a part of this whole organism. There is a strong and inherent network which has a great vitality in the novel. It even goes beyond the art of performance skills and develop only in accordance with their own way without accommodating the author's intention. George Eliot solemnly warned all readers, the novel will be ended, but the entire network structure will exist , and the new relationship will begin. So long as this organic network of relationships exist, the story will not end, a network of lines of latitude and longitude are constantly staggered and extended all the timeâ…¡,From the concept of organic community, Eliot believed that, since human society is a crisscross network of relationships, then one of the women is an important part of it .Because of the different physical structures, women should become "angels in the home." She concurred with the Comte and Spencer on female social role .The division of labor between men and women in society, and the role of identity should be different. She stressed that women should remain the natural characteristic of women. Therefore, in "Middlemarch", the women that should be respected is Mary Garth, instead of Dorothea and Rosamond. Eliot believed that Mary Garth is the ideal image of women. In Eliot's novels, she searched for "female character" different from the men. She thought that love and dedication should be the unique virtues of women, so the novel has such scenes: the infamous husband finally repented his sins in the embrace of his wife. The idle men began to work independently under the influence of his lover. It is the mutual support that make the family firmer and firmer, and promote the sustainable development of the society.â…¢,Eliot denied the radical social development. In her mind, social should be originated from the organic development of the natural law slowly. There is a connection between the individual human interdependence: mankind's past, present and future between continuous and indivisible, personal and social growth and development of biological evolution are "progressive." Therefore, George Eliot did not advocate rapid revolution. She believed that social development should be originated from the organic development of the natural law slowly.Therefor,In the novel, Lidegaite was failure and forced to abandon her dream, which has once been vigorous to reform the modern medicine system ; Mr. Garth who quietly applied the new technology to to the traditional farming became a model for the development of agriculture in Middlemarch. In conclusion, the 19th century scientific concept of organic community which has a major impact on Eliot is behind the times.Human society is fundamentally different from the complexity of biological organisms, it has its own special quality of the provisions. As a female writer in Victorian era, Eliot was inevitably affected and limitated by the environment. Perhaps only when we traced back to the era of Eliot, can we understand her profound insights.
