Research About Literati Going To The North Of The Xiao Clan In Lanling

The Xiao clan in Lanling was a respected and influential family during the Qi and Liang dynasties, possessed profound culture details, and made a great contribution to the culture and literature at that time. However, Commentators about history of literature paid little attention to literati going from south to north of the Xiao clan. According to this, this article tries to do systematic study about literati going to the north of the Xiao clan in Lanling from two visual angles, namely family and district, while basing on political and cultural background of the Northern dynasty, using fusion of North-South writing style as a clue and keeping a foothold on the analysis of historical materials.North-South military antagonism and power struggle of imperial household during the Qi and Liang dynasties were the direct reasons for the fact that literati of the Xiao clan went from south to north. Generally speaking, literati going from south to north of the Xiao clan were accorded courteous reception in aspect of politic and was esteemed in aspect of culture during the Northern dynasty, so their creative activities in culture and literature were still very active.This paper treats three political centers, namely the Northern Wei dynasty, the Northern Qi dynasty and the Northern Zhou dynasty as demarcation lines, and makes statements on their developing conditions of literature, characteristics of writing style and expanding demands of culture separately. Relying on literary creations of literati going to the north of the Xiao clan in Lanling, this paper makes a thorough inquiry into distinguishing features of literary works created by literati of the Xiao clan and contributions made by literati of the Xiao clan to culture and literature during the Northern dynasty. This paper points out that the fusion of North-South writing style was a tortuous and rising process in history of literature, and we should pay attention to the important role played by the Xiao clan in Lanling in this process.
