Code-switching, as a phenomenon of practical use of different varieties of language in people's communication, has been a hot topic in sociolinguistic study since the 1970's. Researchers from different disciplines have made researches on code-switching used in different settings from sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, grammatical and pragmatic perspectives. This thesis attempts to study code-switching between Chinese and English. The sources of materials come from newspapers, magazines, online novels, popular songs and TV & radio programs, which add up to altogether 1713 items. The author mainly uses three ways—quantitative approach and qualitative approach, contrastive approach and analytic and inductive approach—for the comprehensive study. The author of this thesis accomplished the following research work in order to analyze the Chinese-English code-switching existing nowadays:1. Valuable data were obtained by collecting considerable quantities of materials, which are used as the basis of analysis in this thesis and may be of some use to those researchers who want to carry on the related researches as well.2. Materials of the research were collected from several carriers of language, which can compensate for the inadequacies of the past researches which were focused on single carrier of language.3. A clear and objective insight into the present situation of Chinese-English code-switching in our daily life has been made by analyzing the collected materials. 4. Distinct quantitative recognitions about structural forms of English function as an embedded language have been established. There are altogether five chapters in this thesis. Chapter One introduces the related definitions of code-switching. Chapter Two makes a review of the situation in the past research on code-switching. Chapter Three explains the source of materials and ways of analysis. Chapter Four makes a grammatical analysis of the materials. Chapter Five comes to a conclusion on the whole thesis.
