Abstract/Summary:
As an outstanding bilingual novelist, critic, as well as a poet, the Russian-born American writer Vladimir Nabokov attact many attention in America in the 1960s with his Nabokoval Novels. Each of his novels is a complex combination in which the continuity of narrative structures is usually broken, thus enable the confused reader to take an active part in the interpretation and recreation of the novels. Also ,he usually presents parody and irony in his novels by subverting the superficial subject and what's more, he often mixs some charming fairy tales into his plots and stories which can no doubt arose the reader's imagination and fatasy towards this great Magician. This paper will take his representative works in different periods as an example, and then try to interprete and analyze his writing features, and unique literature ideas.Ⅰ.Metafiction——beyond the boundary of traditional narrative This concept metafiction was first put forward by William H Gass in his essay entitled Philosophy and the Form of Fiction.Metafiction is fiction about fiction which means the writer will break the boudary of traditional narratives and its continuity of narrative structure and then comment on the narration directly. In the fiftys and sixtys of the nineteen century when the experimental novels were crowded on the literary stage, every his long novels became a pioneer. However, unlike his fellow writers who intend to totally destoy the heroes and the existing world and force the readers to seek clues in the remaining scrubs, Nabikov hides himself behind the stage, and puts his hero efore to act freely on the narrating stage. He breaks the taditional form of narrative, put various word play into his texts which have a strong intention of self-awareness. The representative works are Pnin and Lolita. Through these novels,Nabikov expresses the essence of experimental novels, that is, the introspection and attention upon novels.Ⅱ.Parady——subvert the forms and contents of traditional texts As an important literary style phenomenon in his novels, Parady is a keyword in analying his contents, subjects, forms, narrative skills and language styles. The research on parady can help us go deep into the Nabokoval world and grasp his unique literary ideas. The British encyclopedia defines the term as a literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. But the essence of parady is not limited on the style of an ahthor or a work, but on all the staleness and vulgarness We can approach this parady method appeared in his works from two aspects: forms and contents, and no doubt the most representivre works is Lolita.Ⅲ.Paradox--a reverted but reasonable expression Paradox was originally an ancient Greek rhetoric terminology, and later was expanded as a literature creation principle. In contemporary novels, it becomes a most common microscopic rhetoric skill.Because it is usually profound and thought-provoking in plot narration, character portrayal and emotion display, it receives more and more people's attention.Nabokove is a great master in this technique. It is obvious that the parodoxical description in his novels is more stronger and more meaningful and convincing than the direct narration. Laughter in the darkness is such a repretentative.Nabokov's novels establish a new school in the world literary arena with his various narration, confusing structure, bold technique, and gorgeous language. However, he is by no means a Art For Art's sake post -modernist , and his works is not merely a multi-colored dazzling"glass chromosphere".Nabokov firmly objects that literature should reflect the social life. He believes that, firstly, there is not a real world as our final basis, and the so-called objective world and daily reality doesn't exist at all. Secondly, he opposes that the artistic behavior is a mirror reflection, and thus take the artistic work as the correspondence of real life. When comparing literature with fairy tales,Nabokov also emphasizes that literature must have.In his novel, we can feel his earnest examination on human existing condition and deep consideration on life suject. His artistic world is not thepure me-world, both philosophical and moral glory glitter deep within his poetic world constructed by language and his quick-wit.
