Under globalization, Chinese traditional knowledge is facing great challenge. On one hand, people at home are greatly influenced by American culture, and gradually forget our own. Fashion and fad have driven profound and meaningful Chinese traditional knowledge out of people's mind. On the other hand, many foreigners have coveted some traditional knowledge for a long time and tried to grasp every chance to own them. Thanks to the birth of intellectual property system, those thoughtful foreigners take advantage of legislation differences and defects of different countries and rush to register intellectual property of some Chinese traditional knowledge in order to make profit. And for some aspects of CTK that are not included in intellectual property protection system, they are exposed to the world without effective protection and enough considerations. This phenomenon also inspires foreigners to seize some precious Chinese traditional knowledge treasure. Those behaviors hurt our national feelings as well as our economic benefits. Based on these facts, this dissertation was written out.Chapter one introduces definitions of some key words, like traditional knowledge and intellectual property. Then it gives a brief introduction of background information on this aspect.Chapter two presents problems in protection of IPP of CTK at present. The five pieces are as following: Chinese traditional knowledge covers too much and the ownership is difficult to define; legislation is not sound and reasonable and execution is not forceful; application procedure is copious and complicated; people do not attach great importance on this aspect; status of traditional knowledge is weakening and some even struggle to survive.Chapter three reveals reasons behind those phenomena and problems. As far as the writer is concerned, there are primarily five reasons: economic reason, political reason, social reason, systematic reason, and international reason. After analyzing reasons in chapter three, chapter four puts up with some successful examples and some proposals on protection of Chinese traditional knowledge. At first, it takes American culture and Japanese culture for example, and outlines successful examples about their efforts on popularizing their traditional knowledge and protecting intellectual property on their traditional knowledge. And then it brings forward a few suggestions. It advocates that we could develop and expand our traditional knowledge through developing economy, innovations, government support and taking advantage of media. The last chapter forecasts the outlook protection of Chinese traditional knowledge under intellectual property system. Protection of traditional knowledge will become popular in the world and our efforts on this aspect will get paid. But there are still some challenges here. Legislation system of single country will become complex, so does international rules and practices. Globalization, modernization and urbanization will continue to threaten traditional knowledge protection. In order to avoid misunderstanding of some abbreviations in the text, it should be clarified that IP is short for intellectual property; IPP is short for intellectual property protection; CTK is short for Chinese traditional knowledge; TK is short for traditional knowledge. These abbreviations are just used for sake of convenience.
